Mike Gorman: '86 Celtics Would Beat Golden State Warriors
BOSTON (CBS) -- The record-breaking Golden State Warriors are up 2-0 in the NBA Finals after shellacking the Cleveland Cavaliers for two straight games. So if they can finish the Cavs off, that makes the 2015-16 Warriors the greatest NBA team in history, right?
Not according to the voice of the Celtics, Mike Gorman. Toucher & Rich posed the question to him Monday morning after Golden State's 110-77 win over Cleveland. He believes Larry Bird's 1985-86 Celtics team would be able to vanquish this year's version of the Warriors.
"I think [the Warriors] are in the conversation [for greatest team ever], without question, but I think the '86 Celtics would beat Golden State," said Gorman. "I think Boston had too many answers along the front line, and I think Dennis Johnson - God rest his soul - would relish the chance at playing against guys like [Stephen] Curry and [Klay] Thompson."
The 1985-86 Celtics, led by the "Big Three" of Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parrish, finished 66-16 in the regular season then went on to beat the Houston Rockets in six games in the NBA Finals. You could certainly pick worse all-time teams to pit against this year's Warriors, who just barely beat out the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls' single-season record with 73 regular season wins.
Be prepared for a lot more of these debates if the Warriors finish the job.
Gorman also talks about how the Warriors have dominated the series so far, as well as Kevin Durant's chances of leaving Oklahoma City - but not necessarily for Boston. Listen to the full podcast below:
