Two Injured In Head-On Crash Involving School Bus In Mendon
MENDON (CBS) -- A man and woman were injured when their sedan collided head-on with a school bus carrying children aged 6-8 on Route 140 in Mendon Wednesday morning.
The male driver had to be cut from the car, and was taken from the scene by LifeFlight. His female passenger was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Their names and conditions were not yet known.
All of the children who were on the bus are believed to be okay.
"Some of the kids that were in the back said they kind of landed on top of each other because they were seated so close together, and it just happened so quickly," said April Hodge, who lives near the crash scene.
The crash happened around 8:15 a.m. at Bates Road and Cape Road, according to the Bellingham Fire Department. The black Hyundai sedan apparently accelerated into the bus's path.
"It sounded like metal, I didn't hear any screeching tires or anything, I just heard a crash," said Hodge.
Neighbors said the intersection could be a difficult one.
The 15 bumped and bruised campers were on their way to a YMCA camp. After the crash, they were herded to a nearby yard, where neighbors brought them water and let them use the bathroom.
When she heard the crash, Hodge ran over to help.
"They were shaken up, but they were very sweet and were happy to just sit and be calm and wait for their parents to get there," said Hodge. "There were definitely some tears, they were worried about how they were going to get to camp."
While parents came to pick up some of the kids, most of them continued on to camp after another bus came.
"Their counselors were talking to them, police were talking to them," said neighbor Kevin Rudden. "I didn't see anybody crying or anything like that, and I think the parents were more upset when they came to pick them up."
Accident reconstruction teams were still working the crash scene at noon Wednesday.
