Men Charged With Stealing Batteries From Highway Traffic Signs

WAKEFIELD (CBS) -- Police arrested two Melrose men suspected of stealing batteries from highway traffic signs on Sunday.

A driver called police at about 2 p.m. to report what looked like two men swiping the batteries from MassDOT sign boards on I-95 in Wakefield, according to Massachusetts State Police. The caller stayed on the phone with police as he watched the suspicious activity continue.

Massachusetts State Police said a trooper was able to find the 2002 Ford F150 in question and pulled it over. Troopers said they found 16 batteries, with cables still attached, in the bed of the pickup track.

The driver and passenger were arrested and face charges including larceny and destruction of property, police said. The value of those batteries has not yet been determined.
