Medford mailman seriously hurt after group attacks him, steals key for mailboxes
MEDFORD - Medford Police are looking for three people who attacked a mailman and left him seriously hurt Tuesday.
The United States Postal Service letter carrier was delivering mail on Arden Road around 11:40 a.m. when the three went after him. Police said he was punched in the head and ended up with injuries to his face. The mailman, who has not been identified, was rushed to the hospital with what police described as "serious injuries."
"The injuries, while significant, are not believed to be life-threatening," the U.S. Postal Inspection Service said in a statement Wednesday.
Investigators said the group stole a postal service master key, which can be used to open mailboxes.
"We were seeing this across the country, with quite a few assaults in Massachusetts of mail carriers," said Medford Police Officer Jessica Walsh.
Sarah Carroll lives across the street from where the incident happened. Her security camera recorded part of it.
"I heard a scream, or a yell. It sounded like it came from an older gentleman. I looked out my window, and saw he was in her driveway on the ground. She was with him by that point. She was comforting him," Carroll said, talking about her neighbor who ran to help the man.
Police say the three suspects hopped into a Ford F-150 pickup truck and took off. It was later found in Lowell with several people inside. Investigators are trying to determine if anyone was involved.
"No arrests have been made at this time. We are still working on investigating and identifying those individuals," said Officer Walsh.
Medford Police were not able to confirm if any of the people in the car have been detained.
