MBTA Green, Orange Line Service Temporarily Change After Government Center Parking Garage Collapse

BOSTON (CBS) -- The MBTA says Green Line and Orange Line services will be suspended in the tunnels beneath the site of Saturday's collapse at the Government Center Parking Garage. The accident killed 51-year-old demolition worker Peter Monsini.

The Orange Line will be suspended between North Station and Back Bay. Customers are encouraged to use the Green Line between Park and Copley or take the Commuter Rail from Ruggles or Back Bay to South Station. CharlieCards will be accepted.

The Green Line will be suspended between North Station and Government Center.  Shuttle buses will take riders between those two destinations.

For Haymarket Station-bound bus riders, Routes 92, 93, and 111 will be diverted to North Station. Northbound customers can transfer to the subway and southbound customers can transfer to the bus shuttle or walk to Government Center for Green Line service.

MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak said service on the Orange and Green line will be impacted for a while.

"It will last as long as it takes for us to ensure that the integrity of the tunnels are intact. We want to make sure that the system is absolutely. safe. Obviously, we've had a terrible tragedy occur. What happened is tons of debris have fallen onto the top of the tunnels. So first, we need to make sure the site is safe for staff to go in and actually inspect those tunnels. Then we need to make sure the tunnels are safe and then we will resume service," he told WBZ-TV Monday.

Poftak said the MBTA is not involved the investigation into to how the garage collapsed.

"This is a separate, private project. It just happens to have occurred directly over our tunnel. So obviously, everything that came down, came down either on or in the vicinity of where our tunnels are located. That's our involvement here," he said.
