Mazz: Tim Thomas Would've Stopped The Dale Weise Breakaway Goal
BOSTON (CBS) - Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask had himself a stellar regular season and was rewarded for his performance by being selected as a finalist for the Vezina Trophy, awarded annually to the league's best goaltender.
However, so far in this series Tuukka Rask is not playing like a Vezina Trophy finalist.
Historically Rask has struggled against Montreal, and it's been no different through three games in this series. On Tuesday night, with the Bruins down 2-0 and in desperate need of a goalie to keep them in the game, Rask allowed a five-hole goal to Habs fourth liner Dale Weise.
This did not sit well with Tony Massarotti.
"What is the percentage of a good shootout player? 40 percent? 35? 30?" asked Mazz
"Yeah, about 30 percent," said Felger.
"So that means that a goalie should stop seven out of every 10 breakaways, in theory, right? And Weise beats [Rask] five-hole?" said a perturbed Mazz.
It's one thing to allow a goal to Tomas Plekanec on a defensive breakdown from Kevan Miller, and it's another thing to get beaten on a breakaway by P.K. Subban -- but Weise?
Dale Weise's career high for goals in a season is four -- not exactly a sniper, which makes the goal all the more maddening.
"Singularly [the middle two goals] were not Tuukka's fault. Those were clear breakaways. . . but can you give me one? That was a little too easy for a guy who's a fourth line, borderline NHL player. That was a little too easy," said Felger. "Can you give me a little more on that one?"
"The goalie has the edge on the breakaway, so the idea that none of this is Rask's fault is so wrong and it pisses me off. You know what I found myself saying? [Tim] Thomas would have stopped it three years ago. Tim Thomas would have made that save. He would have stopped one of them, that's for sure. Thomas would have kept them in it because he had a knack for making big saves," said Mazz.
Do you agree with Tony's assessment?
