Mayor Walsh Looks To Improve Dorchester's Strand Theatre

BOSTON (CBS) -- Mayor Marty Walsh wants to revitalize the Strand Theatre in Dorchester and he's looking to students at University of Massachusetts Boston for ways to do it.

A few months ago Walsh asked students at the UMass Honors College to suggest ideas for the theatre's rebirth. On Friday, the students presented their ideas.

Some of the recommendations included to make an arts and culture district in Uphams Corner center and make the changes in the infrastructure to the Strand as needed to make it a more viable cultural destination. Another idea was to open the Strand on a more regular basis and get more people in the community involved.

Like Walsh, who grew up in Dorchester, the students who presented felt a deep appreciation for the community and the theatre.

"I see just a magical place where, when you just walk in, it becomes a world of its own," sophomore Emma Hayes told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Carl Stevens. "A lot of love from its past and I think there's a lot of potential for it in the future."
