Mayor Walsh Launches Gun Buyback Program In Boston
BOSTON (AP) — Mayor Martin Walsh has launched a new gun buyback program to help combat violence in Boston.
Firearms are being accepted anonymously starting Monday at district police stations and designated sites. All guns are being accepted, with a $200 Visa gift card incentive given for working handguns.
People won't be prosecuted for possessing an illegal handgun, but there won't be amnesty for other crimes committed with that firearm. Guns not needed for evidence in criminal cases will be destroyed.
WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Lana Jones reports
Guns must be unloaded, placed in a plastic bag and then in another carrier such as a gym bag or backpack. Ammunition must be in a separate bag. Drivers must put the items in the trunk of their vehicle.
Walsh said the program is part of a long-term anti-violence effort.
