Mattapan Man Arrested In Chinatown Shooting That Wounded Four

BOSTON (CBS) – Boston police have arrested a Mattapan man in a Chinatown shooting early Sunday morning that sent four people to the hospital.

Police told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 the shooting happened just before 3 a.m. at 15 Edinboro St. near the New Moon Villa restaurant.

According to police, officers on patrol heard what sounded like gun shots outside 15 Edinboro St. and saw a man fleeing. The officers pursued him on foot and after a brief chase they caught the suspect.

Police said that during the chase an officer's gun discharged but a preliminary investigation found there were no injuries as a result.

Melvin Smith, 27, of Mattapan was arrested and charged with assault by means of a dangerous weapon, police said. According to police, Smith is known to Boston officers and has previous firearm convictions.

Police said none of the victims' wounds were life-threatening. All four were men between the ages of 22 and 27.

Two of the victims were taken to Mass. General Hospital, one was taken to Tufts Medical Center and the fourth to Boston Medical Center.

Police said they recovered one firearm at the scene.

No further information was available on the circumstances of the shooting.
