"I think people are doing a lot of day trips on that weekend, so you have a lot of people who are making probably more than one trip. It's pretty much statewide," state highway administrator Frank DePaola told WBZ NewsRadio 1030.
DePaola said most people are surprised by that.
"Most people always go to either Thanksgiving weekend or July 4th weekend, assuming those would be the highest. But normally, those are probably down somewhere around 20th in volume," he said.
"It's actually Columbus Day, Mother's Day, and most summer weekends on Friday."
WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Carl Stevens reports
To keep things moving, DePaola says most construction work on major roads will be suspended for the weekend.
