Massachusetts Teachers Earn Good Grades In State Evaluation System

BOSTON (AP) — Most Massachusetts teachers earned good grades under the state's evaluation system last school year.

Data released by state education officials on Tuesday showed that about 86 percent of teachers earned a proficient rating in their performance reviews for the 2014-15 year, roughly the same as the previous year.

About 10 percent were deemed exemplary, the highest rating, up from 8 percent a year before.

Meanwhile, 4.5 percent of teachers were found to be in need of improvement or unsatisfactory, a slight decrease.

This is the third year of the state's teacher evaluation system, but the first year that all school districts were expected to participate.

Education officials said the data confirm that most teachers in Massachusetts are doing a good job, and that those who aren't either improve or leave.
