Downpours, thunderstorms in forecast for Massachusetts Monday. Maps show where rain will be heaviest.
BOSTON - If you're in the Boston area or travelling through Massachusetts Monday, be prepared for heavy downpours and thunderstorms in the late afternoon and early evening.
The WBZ Weather Team has issued a Next Weather Alert because there could be localized flooding and brief, gusty winds.
The Storm Prediction Center has included portions of Massachusetts in the marginal risk for severe thunderstorms. This is the lowest level threat, a one on a scale of five.
When will the heaviest rain arrive?
While we anticipate a wet morning with showers in and out in the first half of the day, the stronger storms are expected later in the day.
Late afternoon to early evening is when storms are most likely to pose a severe threat.
Be advised that heavier downpours are expected to cause minor flooding and ponding on both primary and secondary roads. Coupled with the lingering fog, travel is expected to be impacted.
Rip currents
Dangerous rip currents from Ernesto have also been a concern along the Cape. This also includes the south-facing beaches of Rhode Island, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.
What do you do if you're caught in a rip current?
Remain calm. Swim parallel to the shore until you find an exit and can get to shore safely. However, it is best to avoid swimming in the highlighted areas until the rip currents are not as dangerous. We should start seeing some relief from this on Tuesday.
Weather forecast for the week
The chances of rain will diminish as the week goes on.
By the middle to the end of this week, it will be comfortable, sunny, and dry. Almost fall-like weather is in store for us after the storms pass!
