Cleanup Continues After Heavy Rains Cause Flooding In Mass., NH

WORCESTER (CBS/AP) – Cleanup efforts continue Saturday morning after heavy rain swept through central and eastern Massachusetts, causing flooding on local streets and roads.

The National Weather Service says Friday night's storm dumped about 5 inches of rain on Worcester and 2 to 3 inches on communities such as Chelmsford and Leominster. Some utility customers were without power for several hours.

Worcester officials urged residents to stay off the streets and told drivers to be cautious Friday night.

The Worcester Fire Department said it rescued dozens of motorists after they became stranded in their vehicles.

Due to power outages in Worcester, traffic signals remain out of service in the area of Highland Street at Park Ave, Sever Street at Pleasant Street, Hawley Street at Pleasant Street, Endicott Street at Millbury Street and Hammond Street at Southbridge.

The rain and lightning caused some high schools and colleges to postpone athletic events.

District Highway crews working overnight, today to clear flooding, reopen Route 20, state roadways.

Some areas of New Hampshire reported at least 3 inches of rain, causing flooding in some parts of the state.
