Mass. Man Files Discrimination Complaint, Claims Job Offer Rescinded Over Same-Sex Spouse
MILTON (CBS) - A Milton man has filed a discrimination complaint against an all-girls Catholic prep school in Milton, claiming they rescinded a job offer after learning he has a same-sex spouse.
Matthew Barrett is filing the complaint with the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination.
In the complaint, Barrett claims he was offered the job of food services director at Fontbonne Academy back in July, but the school reneged on the offer two days later after he filled out the paperwork listing his husband as the emergency contact.
Ben Klein, Barrett's attorney with GLAD, a gay and lesbian advocacy group, says this will be the first case against a religiously affiliated school who fired someone for marrying someone of the same sex.
WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Carl Stevens reports
"He was very qualified for this job and he was really excited. He loves working with students and it was a pay increase and it was close to home," Klein explained. "He was really upset when his dream job was taken away from him simply because he married the person that he loves who happened to be a man."
Fontbonne said it would not comment on the matter.
"Fontbonne Academy does not comment on personnel matters or matters of pending or threatened litigation," the statement said.
