Freight Train Fire In Mansfield Causes Commuter Rail Delays
MANSFIELD (CBS) -- A stubborn fire on board a trash-filled freight train sent smoke billowing through the Route 140 area and caused commuter rail delays Tuesday morning.
Mansfield Police received a call at 4:33 a.m. that there was a train on fire on the tracks.
They found flames had engulfed half of one of the frieght cars.
The train was moved from Route 140 to near Country Street, where Mansfield Fire thought they put out the flames. But, they had to return several hours later when it started smoldering again.
North Main and Country Streets were shut down and reopened, and Country Street was again closed when the firefighters had to return to the scene.
Earlier in the morning, MBTA spokesperson Joe Pesaturo said the fire caused delays on the Providence commuter rail line.
The 5 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. trains were stopped completely on the tracks and ended up about an hour minutes behind schedule.
The cause of the fire was not yet known.
