Norton Man Held On Bail In Fatal Mansfield Road Rage Crash

ATTLEBORO (CBS) -- A judge set bail at $75,000 Tuesday for a 67-year-old man charged in a deadly road rage crash in Mansfield.

Michael Hinds, of Norton, faces seven different charges including motor vehicle homicide while under the influence of liquor.

Investigators say Hinds was driving a pickup truck on Route 495 north at about 11 a.m. Monday and became involved in a road rage incident with another pickup driver, 37-year-old Jarrad Aronne of Foxboro. Police say a 34-year-old Foxboro man who was a passenger in the vehicle was injured.

Aronne, a father of a 7-year-old boy, was killed when his truck was hit for a second time and rolled over.

"It was obviously a tragic accident," Hinds's defense attorney Mike Maloney said Tuesday. "He has expressed contrition, that would be an understatement."

Police say Hinds fled the scene and was arrested at his Norton home.

According to a police report, when Hinds was arrested he said, "I smashed into someone, it's not like I killed someone."

This is the third DUI arrest for Hinds. Prosecutors said four open beer cans and nip bottles were found in his pickup truck.

Aronne was an electrician, with a growing family. He recently got engaged. "He was an awesome guy and this man has destroyed our family," Aronne's fiancee Tricia Santos said. "Jarrad made me laugh every day and I'm going to miss that."

Aronne's mother says Hinds is a "creature" that should never have been behind the wheel.

"I just hope like crazy whatever judge he goes before gives him the maximum for his crime," Andrea Aronne says.
