Man Trapped In NH House Fire Has Died, Authorities Say
BEDFORD, N.H. (CBS) -- A man who became trapped in a house fire in Bedford, New Hampshire late Monday night has died, authorities say.
The fire broke out at an Elk Drive home around 11 p.m. on Labor Day.
Firefighters found the basement ablaze at the two-story house, according to a statement released Tuesday by the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal's Office.
They tried to rescue the man, but the heavy fire conditions hindered their attempts to reach him.
After the fire was mostly knocked down, they found the man on the second floor.
He was rushed to Catholic Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
The man has not been identified by authorities.
An autopsy will be done by the Medical Examiner's Office in Concord.
The origin and cause of the fire are being investigated by the Fire Marshal's office and the Bedford Fire Department.
Investigators say preliminary indications are that the fire started in the basement and heavy smoke and "products of combustion" quickly spread throughout all floors of the home.
