Man Injured, Dog Killed By School Bus In South End

BOSTON (CBS) – A man was hit and injured by a school bus while walking his dog in Boston's South End early Friday morning.

Police were called to Dartmouth Street near the intersection of Columbus Ave. at about 7:30 a.m. after the crash.

Officers said the man was about 50 years old. He was taken to Tufts Medical Center, but the extent of his injuries is still not known.

The dog was killed after being hit by the bus.

Boston Public Schools communication director Denise Snyder said the bus was carrying METCO students, though no one on the bus was injured.

There were 21 high school students on the bus at the time of the crash and the driver stopped afterwards. The students live around Boston and were being brought to Concord-Carlisle High School.

"Guidance Counselors and school leaders met the bus when it arrived at school to provide students with appropriate support and will continue to work with individual students as needed," Concord Desputy Superintendent John Flaherty said.

Initial investigation indicates that the man was walking in the crosswalk when he was hit, WBZ-TV's Bill Shields reported.

Residents who live in the area said they were saddened, but not stunned, to hear of the serious pedestrian accident.

"It's very challenging to be a pedestrian in this city. Whether you're walking by yourself, with a dog, or I see so many women with strollers. It's very challenging and it's very sad to hear," said resident Amelia Wren.
