Man Seriously Hurt In Fiery Rollover Crash On Route 44 In Plymouth

PLYMOUTH (CBS) -- A 35-year-old Worcester man was seriously hurt in a fiery rollover crash on Route 44 in Plymouth on Saturday night.

State Police were called to the crash site located about one mile west of Cherry Street.

A preliminary investigation indicates the man was driving a 2005 Toyota Highlander west on the route when his vehicle entered the median at a high rate of speed, struck a large sign post, and rolled over several times before coming to a stop in the median, police say.

The vehicle caught fire and several passers-by helped free the man from the vehicle and moved him away from the crash site. Shortly thereafter, the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames.

Route 44 East and West were closed while MedFlight arrived. The driver was flown to Massachusetts General Hospital.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

No charges have been filed.

Police say Route 44 East will remain closed while the sign is fixed.

Traffic was diverted to Spring Street.

Plymouth and Kingston firefighters and EMS, Plymouth and Kingston police, and the state Highway Department helped State Police at the scene.

No additional details were immediately available.
