Man Charged With Attempting To Burn Down Masonic Lodge Faces Judge
BOSTON (CBS) --- Accused of attempting to burn down the Grand Lodge Masonic building in Boston, 31-year-old Kevin Jones of Dorchester faced a judge Tuesday in Boston Municipal Court.
Prosecutors say on Monday night, surveillance cameras caught Jones walking into the Masonic Lodge asking if he could use the lobby. The security guard said it was closed for the evening. Jones allegedly left but returned with lighter fluid.
"He came over here sprayed the couches and tried to ignite them," Robert Jolly of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts said. "Security came outside of the booth tackled him and brought him down to the floor and held him down while someone called 911."
In Boston Municipal Court, Jones was charged with attempting to burn down a building and attempting to destroy a place of worship. A court physician said Jones is dealing with serious mental health issues and was ordered to Bridgewater State Hospital for a 20 day mental health evaluation.
"He has a good heart and good-natured person. I don't know what to make of the situation and until I know more, I really can't say," Jones' friend, Steve Malloy said.
As for this historic Grand Lodge building built in 1898, Jolly says they are grateful for the security guard and his heroic effort.
"This security guard acted very quickly and prevented something escalating even further. A building like this you can never replace," Jolly said.
