Man Charged With Armed Carjacking In Brockton Held Without Bail
BROCKTON (CBS) – A man charged with robbing and stealing the car of a young woman, her mother and her baby at gunpoint in Brockton was ordered held without bail at his arraignment on Wednesday.
Jose Robles, 32, of Taunton, pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including armed carjacking and armed robbery, during his appearance in Brockton District Court.
A judge also ordered Robles to have no contact with the victim.
Around noon on Tuesday the victim reported walking out of Macy's at the Westgate Mall with her mother and baby when they allegedly found Robles inside her car.
"He...pretended he got into the wrong car, started to walk away apologizing, (and) then said, 'You know what? I'm going to take your car," the victim told WBZ-TV.
That's when Robles allegedly flashed a gun and demanded she give him her keys and their purses before speeding away in the car.
Within the hour, the woman's car was found wrapped around a telephone pole in Stoughton.
"The defendant jumped out of the car with a black pistol and a person's handbag and attempted to flee before being captured by the (Massachusetts State Police) troopers," Assistant District Attorney Jonathan Schulman said.
Prosecutors say Robles admitted he stole the woman's car when she was brought to the hospital to identify him, saying "It was me. I'm sorry."
Investigators say the gun used during the robbery was actually a pellet gun. It was recovered by police when Robles was taken into custody.
The victim says she's just happy her family is OK.
"I have the baby, I have my mom, we're healthy and safe," she says. "That's all we care about."
He is scheduled for a dangerousness hearing on Feb. 22.
