Man Arrested After Police Officer-Involved Shooting In Boston

BOSTON (CBS) -- Boston police arrested 40-year-old Tyler Brown after he allegedly fired several rounds at officers in an exchange of gunfire during broad daylight in Boston's South End Saturday. No one, including the officers involved, were injured.

Boston Police received reports of a man threatening people with a gun near Northampton Street at around 2:13 p.m. When responding officers approached Brown, he allegedly took off towards Chester Park.

"The suspect discharged his weapon at Boston police officers. Being in fear of their lives as well as the pedestrians -- people who are on the streets with their families –- they discharged their weapon at the suspect to stop the threat," said Boston Police Commissioner William Gross.

The violence didn't end there. Gross said Brown put up a fight all the way up to his arrest.

"In turn, the suspect fired his weapon to lock-back, which means he exhausted all of his ammunition," Gross said. "The officers still apprehended the suspect where he violently struggled -- he was fighting all the way."

Brown is no stranger to law enforcement. Gross said he was released from prison in January and criticizing local judges for allowing repeat offenders back onto the streets.

"Folks, we need to think about that when it comes to voting time and about who's releasing violent offenders from jail," Gross said.

Four Boston police officers were taken to the hospital as a precaution. While it's unclear exactly how many shots were fired between the suspect and officers, Brown faces several charges including assault with intent to murder.
