Boston Man Arrested In Assault Of Transit Police Officer

CAMBRIDGE (CBS) -- MBTA Transit Police arrested a Boston man they say assaulted one of their officers.

Travis Artist, 36, was charged with assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, and trespassing.

Transit Police say Artist tried to get into the Harvard Square MBTA station on the Red Line without paying Monday afternoon. They said he created a disturbance when an officer gave him a fare evasion citation, and was ejected and given a trespassing notice.

About ten minutes later, Transit Police say, Artist came back in the station. When the same officer was escorting him out of the station, they say Artist became verbally aggressive and then struck him in the face.

The officer was able to subdue Artist with the help of a private security guard. Transit Police said the officer was taken to the hospital with several cuts to his mouth, and that he was also stuck by an uncapped needle.

Artist is expected to be arraigned in Cambridge District Court Tuesday.
