Man Shot, Killed By Police In Reading

READING (CBS) - A 43-year-old male suspect was shot and killed during an officer-involved shooting in Reading.

The fatal shooting by police occurred around 4:30 p.m. Saturday after officers responded to a Main Street home for a report of a domestic assault, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said in a statement.

Authorities did not release the man's name on Saturday night pending notification of family.

Reading Police responded to the home at about 3:45 p.m. Saturday for a report of an alleged assault involving a 43-year-old man and a household member, Ryan said.

The reporting victim was no longer in the home. Officers were familiar with the location and had earlier responded to the home on Friday night for a reported altercation involving the same man.

"By the time officers arrived on scene on Friday, the man had fled," Ryan said. Police searched the area and were unsuccessful in attempts to locate him.

On Saturday afternoon, when officers responded to the same home, they found the man allegedly involved in the dispute inside the home,  which was dead-bolted from the inside, Ryan said.

Officers eventually gained access to the residence, but the man had fled the home.

Several officers subsequently tried to locate the man. At about 4:33 p.m., shots were fired by a Reading Officer wounding the man, Ryan said.

The man was transported to Lahey Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The officer was also treated and released from an area hospital.

Yellow police tape and Woburn and Reading police officers could be seen Saturday afternoon near the East Coast Gas Station on Main Street.

Investigators spent hours interviewing neighbors and collecting bags of evidence near the gas station, which is also connected to a residential building.

Ryan said the circumstances which led up to the shooting are still under investigation by her office and state and Reading police.

"This is an active investigation," she said.
