Malden Welding Company Linked To Deadly Beacon Street Fire
BOSTON (CBS) - People who live next to the fire scene at 298 Beacon Street were finally allowed to gather belongings Tuesday from their damaged apartments, packing them up and taking them to their new homes.
The fire which tore through the four-story brownstone March 26th, claiming the lives of two Boston firefighters, has been linked to a welder's torch. Sparks are believed to have ignited the blaze on dry clapboard shingles. Fire investigators have said the work, which was being done next door, was done without a permit or a fire detail.
The focus has now shifted to a welding company on Waite Street in Malden. Sources say Boston Police searched D & J Ironworks last week. No one was answering our questions when our cameras were there Monday afternoon.
Sources have confirmed that D & J Ironworks was the company hired by the owners of 296 Beacon Street to repair the railings. However, the owners of 296 Beacon Street were told that work was being done offsite.
On Tuesday, the Malden shop was locked up tight. It is unclear what kind of charges, criminal or otherwise, are possible in a case like this.
With the fire investigation complete at the scene, 298 Beacon Street is now in the process of being boarded up.
Investigators still want answers concerning the movements of the welders that day. So they have collected all of the available video from surveillance cameras up and down nearby streets and alleyways.
