Lynn Man Shot, Killed By Police During Attempted Carjacking
LYNN (CBS) - A Lynn police officer shot and killed a man during an attempted carjacking, Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said.
It happened near the intersection of Nichols and Western avenues around 8 a.m.
Blodgett said four Lynn police officers attempted to serve five warrants on Randolph McClain, 33, at his home.
"As the officers were checking the second floor, they called to him," Blodgett says. "He answered and said he had a gun and he would kill them."
Police say McClain jumped out of a back window and ran. He then allegedly attempted to a carjack a woman, forcing her out of her vehicle.
According to Blodgett, McClain pointed his gun at police. When he did that, three officers shot McClain.
He was taken to North Shore Medical Center's Salem Hospital where he was pronounced dead. No officers were hurt.
A woman told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Carl Stevens she heard someone yell out "Drop the gun! Drop the gun!" before the shooting started.
Another witness told WBZ-TV as many as eight shots were fired during the incident.
Lynn resident Maria Pena, who lives near where the shooting took place, told WBZ-TV's Bill Shields she heard a couple of shots, briefly looked out the window and saw McClain down on the ground.
"It was pretty nerve-wracking," she added.
In the aftermath, several shell casings were scattered on a sidewalk and the windows on the sedan were shattered and blown out.
A gun was also in the street near an evidence marker.
Police say they were looking for McClain because he had threatened his girlfriend and her family.
Nefertiti Graham, McClain's former sister-in-law, says he had a good side.
"All I can say is my brother-in-law was a good father...a good uncle and he loved his children," she told WBZ. "He loved the mother of his children, he loved all (of) his brothers and sisters, and he loved his parents."
