2 teens killed in latest Lynn shooting, police call attacks "targeted"

LYNN – A 16-year-old and a 19-year-old were shot and killed in Lynn late Wednesday night.

The shooting happened around 10:20 p.m. on Camden Street near two auto body shops.  Both victims were rushed to North Shore Medical Center where they died. Their names have not been released.

Sources told WBZ-TV's I-Team investigators believe this was retaliation for an incident the night before at a nearby Pizza Hut where three people were shot. Police said all three were in stable condition Thursday.

"Based on our investigation to this point, we believe that these are targeted attacks, and we ask for the public's help," Lynn Police Chief Christopher Reddy said in a statement.

"This violence is devastating, infuriating, and utterly unacceptable. We will respond with increased police presence as needed and renewed urgency and clarity in our efforts for peace, justice, and a safer community," Lynn Mayor Jared Nicholson said in a statement.

There have been no arrests. Anyone with information is asked to call (781) 477-3190.

Lynn Public Schools superintendent Evonne Alvarez said the 16-year-old killed Wednesday was a student in the district.

"We have experienced a tragic loss within our school community. Our deepest condolences and sympathies go out to the families, friends, staff, and everyone affected by the devastating loss of student life," Alvarez wrote to families. "This heartbreaking event has deeply impacted us all. During this difficult time, it is important for us to come together as a community to offer support and strength to one another."

Deybi Merida was working at a nearby gas station. Merida heard gunshots, but thought the noise was fireworks.

"I was just waiting for my ride when I heard them, but then it happened and the police came and got behind the car I was waiting for and so I couldn't leave," Merida said.

Neighbor Chris Rippy said he was sleeping Wednesday night when the gunfire rang out.

"Usually it's a quiet area for the most part. Don't really hear much trouble going on. For two teenagers at 10:30 to be hit by some gunfire, it's ridiculous," Rippy told WBZ.
