16-year-old student stabbed at Lynn Classical High School, 17-year-old in custody
LYNN - A student was stabbed at Lynn Classical High School Wednesday morning and another student is in custody.
Police said a 16-year-old was stabbed in the back around 10 a.m. and rushed to the hospital. They described his wound as "non-life-threatening."
A 17-year-old student was taken into custody and charged with assault to murder and carrying a dangerous weapon on school grounds. His name has not been released because of his age.
Police said it appeared to be an isolated incident and there's no danger to other students. It's not clear yet what led to the stabbing.
"At first, we thought it was a lockdown drill," said student Derryck Perez. "Our homeroom teachers told what actually happened and I got nervous, goosebumps and everything. She told us there was a guy who got stabbed and they are trying to figure stuff out."
"The school entered into a lockdown to ensure everyone's safety. The Lynn Police Department has apprehended the suspect and is investigating the circumstances surrounding this extremely concerning incident," Lynn Mayor Jared Nicholson said in a statement. "We share our sympathies for the victim and his family and hope for a speedy recovery."
The mayor said families were notified about the stabbing. A long line of parents waited outside the school to pick up their children. The lockdown was lifted just before noon.

"We take this very seriously here and the staff are amazing, training us and everything," said student Alison Rodriguez. "They do worry about us, all of us. Our mentoring teachers worry a lot about us."
