Lowell Police Officer Shoots Man After Being Fired At During Traffic Stop
LOWELL (CBS) – A Lowell police officer shot and wounded a man early Wednesday morning after he allegedly fired at the officer.
The unnamed officer pulled a car over around 3:30 a.m. on Middlesex Street for what police called "motor vehicle violations."
After the driver stopped, police say he got out of the car with a handgun and fired multiple rounds at the officer.
The officer returned fire, but was not struck in the shootout.
Stray bullets shattered at least one window and damaged several vehicles at a nearby auto repair shop, according to WBZ-TV's Christina Hager.
The Lowell man, Darris Newton, 23, was shot in the arm and chest, but his wounds were not life-threatening.
He has been charged with armed assault with intent to murder and other gun and motor vehicle charges.
Newton was scheduled to be arraigned from his hospital bed Wednesday afternoon.
Lowell police said Newton was pulled over for running a red light and driving without headlines on.
