The car that hit them flipped over and landed on its side in the middle of the street. The driver, later identified as 26-year-old Timothy Sawyer of Lowell, was hurt, but not seriously, according to police.
He was arraigned on the charges of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle and failure to stop.
Sawyer was released on personal recognizance and is due back in court October 28.
