Lowell Woman Dies After Allegedly Being Doused In Gasoline And Set On Fire By Husband

LOWELL (AP) — A Lowell  woman placed in a medically induced coma after she was allegedly doused in gasoline and set on fire by her husband has died from her injuries, authorities said.

Celeste Marte-Lebron, 49 of Lowell, died at the hospital on April 20, Marcela Dwork, a spokesperson for the Middlesex district attorney told The Sun of Lowell on Wednesday.

Results of an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death are pending, she said.

Her husband, Santos Lebron De Los Santo, 42, remains held without bail after pleading not guilty to assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury.

De Los Santo, driven by suspected infidelity, followed his wife into the bathroom on the night of March 31 with a gas can and a lighter, doused her with gasoline and set her on fire, prosecutors said at a previous court hearing. She suffered burns over 90% of her body, prosecutors said.

De Los Santo told authorities he just wanted to scare his wife and the fire was started by a possible electrical issue.

De Los Santo's attorney, Lorenzo Perez, said there were known electrical issues in the home, which he said were being investigated.
