Loui Eriksson Reveals Heel Injury Came As Result Of Cut Suffered In Sochi Cold Tub

BOSTON (CBS) -- The NHL's participation in the Olympics has claimed another injured victim. Well, sort of.

Loui Eriksson missed the Bruins' game on Tuesday night and did not practice the next day, and general manager Peter Chiarelli revealed on Wednesday evening that Eriksson was suffering from an infection on his heel. On Thursday, after he returned to the ice at the team's morning skate, Eriksson explained how he suffered the ailment.

Eriksson told reporters that he sustained a cut on his foot while he was in a cold tub in Sochi, according to ESPN's Joe McDonald. That cut became infected, forcing Eriksson to stay off the ice the past two days to let some antibiotics go to work. He will, however, be able to return to game action Thursday night against Washington.

Eriksson did play in the Bruins' first three games coming out of the Olympic break, recording a pair of assists in Sunday night's win over the Rangers and averaging more than 17 minutes on the ice per game.

The team dubbed Eriksson's injury a "minor issue" this week, and his impending return on Thursday night makes that an accurate assessment.

On the scale of Sochi injuries, Eriksson's would rank very far down the list, which includes a broken hand for Penguins D-man Paul Martin, a mysterious lower-body injury for Canadiens goalie Carey Price, and the biggest of them all, a season-ending knee injury for Islanders captain John Tavares.
