Lexington School Evacuated Over Roof Concerns

LEXINGTON (CBS) -- A Lexington elementary school was evacuated Tuesday morning because officials were worried that the school's roof could collapse.

The fire department said a staff member at the Bridge Elementary School on Middleby Road heard a loud noise coming from the roof, triggering the evacuation.

Firefighters and a building inspector investigated, and said they didn't discover any signs of structural or mechanical failure, or stress.

The building was cleared for occupancy, but school administrators decided to keep students and staff in the gymnasium for the rest of the day. Parents were given the option of picking up their children early.

"In the abundance of caution, school staff and Public Facilities agreed that further investigation was needed to identify the source of the noise," school officials said in a statement.

The school said more information will be shared with parents as soon as it's available.
