Leicester Man Leaves Weapons Behind, Escapes On Stolen Rowboat

LEICESTER (CBS) – Police are searching for a man they believe left behind a loaded assault rifle and several other weapons before using a stolen rowboat to escape officers.

Leicester Police responded to a house around 12:30 a.m. on Saturday to arrest him for a previous incident in Worcester.

When officers arrived, they were told the man had left about five minutes earlier. The suspect's car was still at the house, and a resident believed he heard a gunshot just before police pulled up.

While searching the area, police found a loaded assault rifle and a survival kit that had additional loaded magazines.

The items were found near the wood line behind the suspect's home and officers heard someone running from the area in the woods.

A K-9 search led police to Waite Pond, where a resident said his rowboat had been recently stolen.

Just before 5 a.m., police found the stolen rowboat on the Chapel Street side of the pond. Police then ended the search as it appeared the man had fled the area.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
