Teachers Hold Fundraiser For Lawrence Students Who Lost Supplies In School Fire

LAWRENCE (CBS) -- Lawrence teachers are holding a fundraiser to benefit students at a school that was damaged in a fire last week.

A two-alarm fire burned through a 2nd-floor classroom at the Bruce School, but all of the approximately 525 students and 70 staff members escaped the building safely.

The fundraiser seeks donations to buy supplies like paper, pencils, notebooks, and calculators.

The building suffered heavy smoke and water damage, and as a result, 250 sixth, seventh, and eighth-graders lost their school supplies, the American Federation of Teachers said.

The school reopened Monday, but only for grades 3, 4, and 5. The school houses grades 3-8.

Donations can be made at aft.org/bruce-school-relief.
