Teachers Hold Fundraiser To Replace School Supplies Lost In Lawrence Fire

LAWRENCE (CBS) -- The Lawrence Teachers Union and the American Federation of Teachers have started a fundraiser for students who lost supplies in a recent fire at a school.

About 250 students at the Bruce School in Lawrence--6th, 7th, and 8th graders--lost all their school supplies, like pencils, notebooks, and backpacks, when the second floor of the school caught fire on November 14.

Firefighters said the flames likely started in a second-floor classroom and that, while the fire did not spread outside the one classroom, the building sustained heavy water and smoke damage.

The school reopened a week later, but only for grades 3, 4, and 5. The school houses grades 3-8.

Donations can be made at aft.org/bruce-school-relief.
