Keller @ Large: Voters Unfamiliar With Candidates For Governor

BOSTON (CBS) - Wednesday marked the final day for voter registration in advance of the September 9 Massachusetts gubernatorial primaries.

But with less than three weeks before polls open, many voters remain unfamiliar with the candidates running for governor.

WBZ-TV Political Analyst Jon Keller took to the streets of Boston with photographs of each candidate in hand, asking residents if they could identify them.

The results were mixed.

"I know her. That's Martha Coakley, I love Martha. She's very good people," one man said when correctly identifying Coakley's picture.

During Keller's test, Coakley was the most widely recognized candidate.

But others on the street struggled with the quiz.

One man incorrectly identified Don Berwick as Steve Grossman.

Other guesses were even further from the correct answer.

Another man went with Dick Cheney when shown a picture of Berwick.

Another duo took the presidential route rather than identifying a man who is a gubernatorial hopeful.

"It looks like Kennedy," said a pair of women, believing 2010 GOP nominee Charlie Baker was former President John F. Kennedy.

Keller spoke with one man who knew the majority of candidates, but came up empty when looking to recall the name of GOP candidate Mark Fisher.

"I just think that we're so unaware in this country of politics, current events, what's going on in the world, and I think it's too bad," the man said.
