Keller @ Large: Thanks Anthony Silva!

BOSTON (CBS) - Anthony Silva retiring from WBZ NewsRadio 1030? Are you kidding me?

Why would a 45-year-old man in the prime of his professional life retire?

Actually, Anthony is about to turn 65, although you wouldn't know it to look at him. That's what an outdoorsy lifestyle will do for you, which in Anthony's case includes two cycling "centuries" – bicycle rides of 100 miles or more within 12 hours.

Really Anthony, way to make a co-worker feel inferior. I'm ready for a nap after driving 100 miles, let alone riding a bike.

Then again, showing up co-workers is the opposite of what Anthony is about. I sit about 10 feet from his desk and have had ample opportunity over the years to observe his positive personality and infectious energy. Anthony's laugh is one of the more pleasant sounds we ever hear in this newsroom, and we hear it often.

If you check out Anthony's bio on this website, you'll get a sense of his active role in the community, not just as longtime host of the popular WBZ Business Breakfasts but as a citizen of the North Shore. I've had many conversations with him over the years about politics and public issues and his knowledge of and interest in them doesn't stop when he goes home after his shift.

Thursday is Anthony Silva's last day on the air here, and that may come as a shock to listeners who've become used to that mellifluous voice. I asked him to leave me his pipes when he rides off into retirement, but he has yet to get back to me on that.

Oh well. Thanks Anthony, for all these years of humor, intellect and class.

As they used to say around here, we'll BZ'ing you around.
