Keller @ Large: Thankful For People Who Listen
BOSTON (CBS) - Happy Thanksgiving to all WBZ listeners, I hope your family gathering today, if you're lucky enough to have one, is enjoyable.
Tomorrow, as is our custom here, I'll be running down my nominees for the biggest turkeys who made news this year.
But today, let's keep things positive by focusing on the people and pastimes that make us happy, or at least help keep us sane.
I am thankful for people who listen.
That may not sound like much, but take it from someone who gives opinions for a living, when people don't actually listen to what you're saying but just hear what they want to, it's trouble.
Listening sometimes feels like a lost art, and I can see why, it's not so easy to do. You have to suspend judgment, suppress your knee-jerk reactions, and keep your own mouth closed.
I am also thankful for people who speak up when it's uncomfortable to do so.
In a culture where it seems like everyone is yapping up a storm at all times, it's amazing how quiet people get when it's time to stand up to the mob or conventional wisdom.
I am thankful for musicians, like Dennis Brennan, a local blues singer I saw in a tiny bar in Cambridge the other night who poured out his soul as if he was playing to a packed house at Symphony Hall instead of a handful of locals. They set a standard of commitment we would all do well to follow.
And I'm thankful for baseball, my favorite sport, the game that thrills me sometimes, puts me to sleep other times, but most of all means winter is over.
And that's something I'll always be thankful for.
