Keller @ Large: Question 1 Comes Down To Roads And Revenue
BOSTON (CBS) - Roads and revenues. Two key points in the debate over Question 1.
Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 4, when voters will be asked whether or not they support Question 1, which is an effort to repeal a 2013 state law that ties increases in the gas tax to inflation.
State Rep. Geoff Diehl, a republican from Whitman, who seeks a "Yes" vote on Question 1, and Somerville Mayor Joe Curtatone, a democrat supporting a "No" vote, each sat down with WBZ-TV political analyst Jon Keller to discuss their stance on the ballot question.
Curtatone says voters should shoot down the ballot question because he believes repealing the law would lead to less funding for fixing Massachusetts roads.
"This is about public safety," said Curtatone, who said more than half the state's bridges or structurally obsolete.
Diehl, meanwhile, argues that while the roads need repairs, the money should be approved by the legislative body.
"We're saying that there is currently plenty of revenue in the state," said Diehl, regarding where money should come from to make road repairs.
