Jones: Setting Physical Tone Early Key To Patriots Success On Road
BOSTON (CBS) - The Patriots grabbed hold of the AFC on Sunday night in their 42-20 win over Indianapolis on the road, and with six games remaining in the regular season and a lead over every contender in the conference, the road to the Super Bowl would go through New England if the standings hold true.
The operative phrase being "with six games remaining in the regular season" -- it's still too early to be talking playoff seedings.
But a couple of things stood out to 98.5 The Sports Hub's Adam Jones after re-watching the game, some big picture takeaways that he shared with the listeners on Monday night.
Leading up to the game, Jones questioned the team's ability to earn a quality, signature win on the road against a playoff-bound team. In his mind, they needed to prove they could win on the road against an opponent like Indy, and after dismantling the Colts they passed the test.
What's noticeable to Jones is how New England tries to establish the physical tone early in these road games. It worked Sunday night and in Minnesota, but not in Kansas City or Miami.
In total, the Patriots amassed 244 yards on the ground against Indianapolis — a season high. Former practice squader Jonas Gray had 199 of those yards, including four touchdowns.
Jones also credits the defense for their physical play in the Colts win.
Establishing a physical tone early on the road, is this a trend you're noticing too?
