Heyman On Gresh & Zo: Trade Interest High For John Lackey, Andrew Miller
Boston (CBS)- While the main topic of discussion for the upcoming MLB trade deadline has been centered around Jon Lester, CBS Sports baseball insider Jon Heyman told Andy Gresh on 98.5 The Sport Hub's Gresh & Zolak show that other Red Sox pitchers are drawing considerable interest as well.
One obvious trade candidate is veteran right-hander John Lackey, who is 11-7 with a 3.60 ERA this season. The 35-year-old is an enticing entity for a contender because he is effective and is only being paid $500,000 next season.
"I think [Lackey] has value. He has that deal where he is paid the minimum next year. So somebody could work that to make him feel better, but they aren't going to change that then add $10 million to it. They're going to make it a two-year deal or something like that."
The other name on the trade block is left-handed reliever Andrew Miller. Both Gresh and Heyman agreed that Miller could draw attention from teams in need of bullpen help. The 6'7" hurler sports a 2.45 ERA and has racked up 65 strikeouts in 40 1/3 innings.
"He has a lot of talent and teams do like him. I would think that potentially the Angels, Dodgers and Braves are in the mix on Andrew Miller. I think the Pirates probably are as well," said Heyman. "Boston has certainly become an interesting trade team right now."
