Heyman On Gresh & Zo: 'Unlikely' Red Sox Trade Peavy, Uehara
BOSTON (CBS) - The Boston Red Sox championship hangover has become a full-blown migraine.
Only a year removed from a World Series championship, the Red Sox are 11 games under .500 and 10 games back in the American League East.
Yet while the team has vastly underperformed, CBSSports.com baseball insider Jon Heyman told Andy Gresh and Scott Zolak on 98.5 The Sports Hub's Gresh and Zolak show that general manager Ben Cherington isn't looking to sell.
"I think they are very reluctant to sell and I understand it. It's July 8th. Nobody's been great in this division. Right now Baltimore is in front. Do we think they are a juggernaut? I'm not so sure they are," said Heyman. "They may trade a couple of change-of-scenery guys, maybe Felix Doubront or maybe Will Middlebrooks potentially -- although I think they will keep Middlebrooks."
There have been rumors that the St. Louis Cardinals have expressed interest in starting pitcher Jake Peavy, but Heyman says Peavy, who is 1-7 with a 4.64 ERA, doesn't hold much value on the market.
"There might be some National League teams that would think he would do better over there, and might take some part of the contract," Heyman said. "But he hasn't obviously had a very good season. I can see the National League switch be worthwhile for him, so I can see a trade, but you're not going to get prospects back for Jake Peavy at this point."
Gresh thought the team could get value on the trade market for Koji Uehara, but Heyman said trading Uehara would signal to fans that the season is lost -- something Red Sox upper management doesn't want to do.
"At that point, you are giving up, said Heyman. "I really don't see that. I mean maybe on July 30th, they say 'You know what? We're really not going to make it this year, we'll take about some serious trades' -- but I just don't see them trading Uehara."
