Jimmy Murphy On Gresh & Zo: '50/50' Loui Eriksson Gets Traded By Deadline
BOSTON (CBS) - The NHL trade deadline is fast approaching and one Bruins player is "50/50" to be sent packing according to hockey writer Jimmy Murphy.
When the Bruins agreed to the trade that dealt Tyler Seguin to the Dallas Stars they got in return what they thought was a solid, two-way player that would coalesce perfectly in coach Claude Julien's system.
Five months into the season that couldn't be farther from the truth.
Murphy thinks there's a realistic chance he's wearing a different uniform come 3 p.m.
"I think that's 50/50 right now. When you look at what's happened this year Reilly Smith has really become the star in that deal. He's really kind of risen above Eriksson there. Yes he's had the concussion issues, but from what I've heard in talking to Bruins sources and other sources around the league, he hasn't come as advertised and they're not particularly satisfied at this point.
"However, you gave up Tyler Seguin in that trade. You don't want to give up on the guy you traded Seguin for this quickly. I would tend to think they wouldn't deal him but I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility. That's why I think that something was, or is going on with Columbus and them involving players on the roster despite what Chiarelli said earlier today."
Murphy also discussed the latest with Marian Gaborik.
Multiple suitors, including the Bruins, are pursuing the Blue Jackets star.
The problem is that general manager Peter Chiarelli is saying he doesn't want to give up any players on his roster, and for a player like Gaborik you'd have to.
Gaborik comes with plenty of skill but also some injury concerns, which is why Murphy likes Thomas Vanek better.
"They've had interest in [Vanek] before and he fits Julien's system better than Gaborik," said Murphy Wednesday morning.
