16-year-old girl fatally stabbed woman during dispute over explicit photos, prosecutors allege

Jamaica Plain stabbing may have been over explicit pictures.

JAMAICA PLAIN – Prosecutors said a 16-year-old girl fatally stabbed a woman Saturday in Jamaica Plain during a confrontation over explicit photos.

Wilmary Mejia allegedly killed a 21-year-old woman and injured a 17-year-old girl on Woodside Ave.

During the 17-year-old's arraignment on Monday, prosecutors said the Mejia's boyfriend sent explicit photos to the victims. The defendant allegedly took a bus to find the victims and was "determined to fight."

Both victims were stabbed in the chest. The woman who died was also stabbed in the neck.

"She was somebody that I care for and somebody that I wish I gave my time to. I wish that I was more closer to," said a woman who did not want to be identified of her 21-year-old neighbor and friend. "She has a son that she's supposed to be raising and she didn't get the chance to. It hurts. It hurts."

Prosecutors said Mejia ran to a construction area where a knife was later found. Video taken from a distance allegedly corroborates witness statements.

Mejia's defense attorney said she has no record and is remorseful.

Due to a joint request by the defense and prosecution, the suspect was allowed to hide her face in court. During court proceedings surveillance video from a nearby business showed EMS and an ambulance rushing to help the victims.

"The defendant and her boyfriend, on the other hand, fled the scene. Police looked for them and they were found in a construction area," said Assistant District Attorney Nathan McGregor.

Mehia's defense attorney said the story is not so clear and maybe self-defense was a factor.

"She kept asking me what happened. She wasn't really sure. She's extremely remorseful. She's only 16 years old," said defense attorney Stephen Weymouth.

Facing murder charges, the teenager will face trial as an adult. A judge ordered her held without bail.
