Vandals Burn Scarecrows Made By New Hampshire Children

JAFFREY, N.H. (CBS) -- Police in New Hampshire are trying to figure out who set scarecrows on fire in an upsetting act of vandalism.

For 15 years, children and their families have been making scarecrows to display on the Jaffrey Common. But on Monday morning, police found one scarecrow on fire and another on the roof of the post office. Later in the day, officers discovered the burnt remains of another scarecrow.

Several other scarecrows were also knocked over.

TEAM Jaffrey, the organization that sponsors the scarecrow-making event, said families that made the vandalized scarecrows were heartbroken.

"Our organization is disheartened that someone would think to vandalize and destroy these crows- made with care and community spirit by those who attended-many of them children who poured their creativity into these scarecrows," Team Jaffrey said.

TEAM Jaffrey said families who lost their scarecrows will get to make another one free of charge.

The weekend event showcasing 244 scarecrows on the common drew over 1,000 visitors, according to organizers. They'll be on display through Oct. 27.
