Red Sox Release A.J. Pierzynski
BOSTON (CBS) -- The A.J. Pierzynski era in Boston is now officially over.
One week after designating the catcher for assignment, the Red Sox announced Wednesday that they have released Pierzynski from the team.
The Red Sox signed the 37-year-old backstop to a one-year, $8.25 million contract in the offseason in hopes that he could serve as a one-year bridge to prospect Chistian Vasquez. But Pierzynski hit just .254 with four home runs and a .633 OPS in 72 games for Boston, and was never a fit in the clubhouse according to multiple reports following his release.
So the Vazquez era got an early start as the Pierzynski came to an early end. Since Pierzynski was DFA'd, Vazquez has split time with David Ross behind the plate, going 5-for-11 with three doubles and three RBIs in three games.
