Speed possible factor in I-93 crash that left driver with life-threatening injuries

Crash shuts down part of I-93 south in Medford, driver with life-threatening injuries

MEDFORD - Speed may have been a factor in a crash on Interstate 93 that left a driver with life-threatening injuries early Friday.

A 2018 Toyota Corolla was severely damaged after it slammed into a guardrail on 93 south near the Roosevelt Circle exit in Medford around 3:20 a.m.

The driver, a 41-year-old man from Rockland, was trapped in the wreckage. He was the only person in the car. Medford Firefighters freed him using the Jaws of Life and he was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital.

"High speed is being examined as a possible contributing factor," State Police spokesman Dave Procopio said in a statement.

Both sides of the highway were closed briefly so a medical helicopter land, but a decision was made to take the driver to the hospital by ambulance instead.

All lanes were re-opened by 6 a.m. but there were still significant residual traffic delays.
