Infielder/Outfielder Jemile Weeks Takes Kelly Johnson's Spot On Sox Roster

BOSTON (CBS) – The Red Sox added infielder/outfielder Jemile Weeks to their active roster to take the place of Kelly Johnson after obtaining him in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles.

Weeks, 27, was acquired Saturday along with minor league infielder Ivan De Jesus Jr. in exchange for Johnson and minor-league third baseman Michael Almanzar.

Appearing in just three games for the Orioles this season, Weeks was 3-for-11 (.273) with a triple and two runs scored.  A switch-hitter, he has spent the majority of 2014 with Triple-A Norfolk in Baltimore's minor league system where hit .280 with one home run and 19 RBI.

Weeks has hit .259 in his major league career with four home runs, and 56 RBI in 226 games between the Oakland Athletics (2011-13) and Orioles (2014). He is the younger brother of Milwaukee Brewers infielder Rickie Weeks, Jemile was a first-round selection of the Athletics (12th overall) in the 2008 June draft.

He was originally selected by Milwaukee in 2005 but chose to play baseball at the University of Miami.
