Hundreds Gather In Boston For Community Holocaust Commemoration
BOSTON (CBS) -- Hundreds of people gathered in downtown Boston Sunday for a special ceremony to celebrate the lives of the Holocaust survivors.
The service was held just days before Holocaust Remembrance Day on Wednesday.
They sang, prayed and lit candles during the community Holocaust commemoration at Faneuil Hall.
Historian David Eisenhower, grandson of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, was the keynote speaker.
He told the crowd this year is important because it marks the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp.
"This year, this week and next, people will come together to commemorate their move from darkness to light," Eisenhower said. "To resolve in their names never again, we will never forget, we will not be silent whenever people suffer."
Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said Holocaust Remembrance Day plays a special role in the city.
"The memorial sits close to my office," he said. "It reminds me and helps me reflect on the importance of standing up for justice."
